Natural Gas Experience In New York State 

• Natural gas was first discovered in New York State in 1821 at Fredonia, NY.


• There have been 75,000 natural gas wells drilled in New York State with 12,000 of those wells still active.


• Since the 1950’s, most of the natural gas wells in New York State have been hydrofraced.


• The chemicals used for hydrofracing have evolved and improved over time and continue to do so.


• The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation requires each company to disclose their formula for chemicals used in hydrofracing.


• Many natural gas companies publically release  their formula for chemicals used in hydrofracing.


• Most hydrofracing only uses about a half dozen chemicals in the process.


• Hydrofracting solutions are composed of 99.5% water and sand and 0.5% chemicals.


• Hydrofracing of natural gas wells occurs daily in New York State.


• Vertical wells use up to 80,000 gallons of hydrofracing solution.

Gas Taxes Help Local Communities And Schools

• Taxes are paid by the energy companies based on the amount of natural gas produced.

• An extensive study of the impacts of natural gas development has been udertaken in the form of the supplemental generic environmental impact statement (sGEIS).


• Hundreds of thousands of man hours have been expended as part of this study.


• Thousands of comments have been reviewed and will be intergrated into the final sGEIS.


• The requirements identified within the sGEIS alomg with the language within the landowner coalition leases will provide the strictest environmental protection for natural gas development in the country.
